Eco-friendly Cleaning Products For Your Kitchen.

Young woman with homemade eco-friendly cleaning productsThese days, eco-friendly cleaning products, are all the rage. Undoubtedly, every home needs a clean kitchen, however, it is essential to understand that not all cleaning products are the same. As we all know, some products we use in our homes are not friendly to the environment. Non-eco-friendly gaseous propellants and corrosive chemicals are the leading contributors. But what are the choices?

Fortunately, with heightened awareness, there are far more eco-friendly product choices available today. Infact the list of products on the shelves that make our kitchens sparkle is seemingly endless! In addition to ready-made products, with a few simple ingredients most people can create their home-made alternatives. The surprising thing is, that with many ingredients already on the kitchen shelves, you too can create safe, effective, natural cleaning products. They cost a fraction of store-bought brands, and clean as effectively, if not better.

Why Some Cleaning Products Are Not That Friendly.

There are several valid reasons to use eco-friendly cleaning products in the kitchen. For one, harsh chemicals can be very harmful to your skin, eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory system. Additionally, they pose a serious threat to pets or sensitive members of the household. Beyond the negative effects on your health, a lot of store-bought cleaning products contain chemicals that can harm the environment as well. Toxic chemicals work their way from your kitchen drains into rivers, lakes, and groundwater. And contaminated water is often responsible for killing vegetation, polluting the soil, and poisoning fish and animals.

Eco-friendly Cleaning Products Vs. Natural.

Eco-friendly products use simple, non-toxic ingredients that are better for the environment. The issue is that not all brands that claim to be “natural” or “organic” are truly eco-friendly. Few federal regulations define which products can claim to be “natural.” Moreover, there are limited regulations that require cleaning product manufacturers to list the ingredients in their products on their packaging.

This means it depends on the informed consumer to either do some research to find the truly eco-friendly brands of cleaning products available or make their own. Some of the best eco-friendly cleaning products you can make or buy contain the same simple ingredients: white vinegar and baking soda. Utilize these two pantry staples to tackle the most mess your kitchen can produce.

Simple Natural Cleaning Routines.

With a few readily available products and versatile cleaning supplies, you can clean your entire kitchen, floor to ceiling, without resorting to the harsh chemicals included in many store-bought brands. For example, you can clean and disinfect sealed wood and tile floors with just a little white vinegar, warm water, and a mop or rag. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oils to get rid of that, to get rid of the vinegar smell, and to have your kitchen smell great.

The same goes for cleaning one of the messiest aspects of a kitchen: the oven. Getting that burned-on gunk off your oven’s interior can be a difficult task. But with a little baking soda, water, and some patience, you can remove most of that tough grime. Allow the baking soda paste to sit overnight before scrubbing, for best results.

Likewise, you can clean glass and shiny surfaces with homemade eco-friendly ingredients. Start by mixing a little rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, cornstarch, and water in a clean spray bottle. Shake well and simply spray onto the soiled glassware. Allow to sit for a few minutes and wipe clean with a lint-free or microfiber cloth. Paper towels are not the best choice to clean glass and shiny surfaces, as they are not necessarily eco-friendly. And besides, they also tend to leave streaks and bits of paper behind.

Homemade Vs. Store-bought Eco-friendly Cleaning Products

If you are not up to creating your cleaning products at home, there are many eco-friendly options available. Some of the more popular brands contain Mrs. Meyer’s products, Bon Ami cleansers, and Method brand products. These and similar brands guarantee their products are both safe and effective, not to mention eco-friendly. Infact, many brands now utilize 100% post-consumer recycled plastic packaging, as an extra measure. On the other hand, you can store your homemade products in glass bottles already lying around in your home.

Regardless if you decide to buy or make kitchen cleaning products, once you start, you won’t go back to using harsh commercially available products again. By doing so, you will safeguard yourself and your family from harmful chemicals and also do your bit to protect the environment.
